Organizational Setting and Reporting
This national position of Associate Field Translator (NO-B) is based in Bangui, within the Conference Services and Translation Unit of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA). The incumbent reports to the Chief of Unit.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Translator/ Chief of Unit, Language, the Associate Translator will be responsible for the following duties.
- Translates, subject to revision, a variety of texts covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, i.e., political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, scientific and technical; respecting deadlines and using appropriate terminology;
- Assists in matters of terminology and style to ensure uniformity and quality;
- Aims at high standard of accuracy, consistency and fidelity to the spirit, style and nuances of the original;
- Observes the established terminology and usage and ensures, as far as possible, consistency with other translators working on similar documents.
- Uses all sources of reference, information and consultation relevant to the text at hand and carries out any research required;
- Maintains a certain speed and volume of output, taking into account the difficulty of the text and the specified deadlines;
- Identify new terminology material for the consideration of revisers and terminology managers;
- Perform other duties as required.

Education
A master’s degree in English literature, English linguistics, or equivalent is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree with two additional years of relevant experience may be considered.

Work Experience
At least two (2) years’ experience in professional translation and /or interpreting (consecutive and / or simultaneous) from English into French and vice versa is required. Proven hands-on extensive experience; background knowledge and experience translating development work is highly preferable; prior experience translating for the United Nations or an international organization is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English and French is required; Knowledge of local languages is required.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
